ATA Certification Exam Prep Workshop

January 20, 2018  |  Boston, Massachusetts

SESSION I:

Preparing for the ATA English>Spanish Certification Exam
Rudy Heller, CT, and Diego Mansilla, CT

ATA-certified translators stand out in their profession. With a 20% pass rate, the ATA Certification Exam can be challenging even for those with experience. This workshop will prepare you for that challenge! Many candidates who fail the ATA Certification Exam are surprised and wonder how—after so many years of experience—they are still unable to pass it. This workshop will help attendees understand how the exam is graded and what are the common errors that candidates make. The presenters will show examples from real-life practice tests to demonstrate common pitfalls, and will provide tips to avoid them.

In order to develop and tailor this course, attendees will be given a sample practice test to translate and return by January 1. Practice test translations received by January 1 will be reviewed in order to target the common—and not so common—errors. Errors used during this course will be kept completely anonymous.

Rudy Heller is an ATA-certified English>Spanish translator and has been a grader for the ATA English>Spanish certification exam for over 12 years. He is a federally certified court interpreter and has been a professional translator for over 40 years. He is a former ATA director.

Diego Mansilla is a grader for ATA's English>Spanish certification exam and a member of ATA's Ethics Committee. He is the director of the translation program at the University of Massachusetts, where he also teaches advanced courses in translation. He was elected to the board of directors of the New England Translators Association in 2014. His areas of research are translation pedagogy, collaboration in translation, and online education and assessment.

SESSION II:

Preparing for the ATA Into-English Certification Exam
Andy Klatt, CT, and Bruce Popp, CT

The speakers will provide a three-hour introduction to ATA's certification exam for candidates translating into English. Topics will include test preparation, how to maximize your potential on exam day, and how the exam is evaluated. The speakers will also provide an overview of ATA's newly updated "Into-English Grading Standards." Translators working from any language into English should benefit from this session. In addition to the material covered in the workshop, it is strongly recommended that you take an ATA practice test before the actual exam. The feedback provided should give you a reasonable idea of whether you are ready to take the exam and, if not, where you need more work.

Andy Klatt is a working translator in the social and natural sciences, medicine, and law for academic publishing. He is an ATA-certified Spanish>English translator, and is also certified by the National University of Colombia and the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Relations (Spanish<>English translation). He taught translation at the university level from 2000-2015. He is a grader for ATA's Certification Program.

Bruce Popp is an ATA-certified French>English translator with a BA in physics from Cornell University and a PhD in astrophysics from Harvard University.
